Most of us know the saying, “The horse is connected from head to toe.” Watching this idea come to life during a bit and bridle fitting session was truly eye-opening. Recently, I worked with a client’s horse during a bit and bridle fitting session that clearly showed how the whole horse’s body works together as one unit.
The Initial Assessment
In my first full-body check, I noticed a big muscle imbalance. The semitendinosus at the back of the thigh was tight and overdeveloped, while the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) at the front of the hip was flat and weak. When ridden, the horse took short steps behind and had trouble moving its hind legs forward under its body.
In competition, this kind of short movement is often mistaken for “collection” or a compact frame. Unfortunately, it’s actually a compensation pattern that many riders and coaches don’t notice at all.
Things got even more interesting when we took a closer look at how the horse responded to the bit.
The Illusion of “Anatomical Theory”
The horse arrived with a double-jointed lozenge bit. While this bit seemed like a good fit for his mouth, it didn’t actually work well for his whole body. A double-jointed bit puts pressure in the center of the tongue, so this horse kept backing away to avoid the discomfort. To get away from the pressure, he was:
- Hollowing his back
- Bracing his neck
- Throwing his balance backwards onto his hind end
His hind end was already tight and weakened from an old injury, so he couldn’t handle the extra strain. As a result, anyone with experience would see that the horse looked completely lame. We switched out the lozenge bit for a curved barrel bit. The difference was immediate. Once the horse felt comfortable, he shifted his weight into a healthy, balanced position. He started reaching for the contact instead of avoiding it. As soon as he accepted the bit, the tension in his neck disappeared, the pressure on his hindquarters eased, and his back legs moved more freely.
The rider looked down at me in surprise and said, “Wow, so THAT is what people mean by bridle lameness.” How can just changing a bit free up a horse’s hocks and hips so quickly? The reason is a continuous chain of muscle and connective tissue that links the head all the way to the hind hoof. The hyoid apparatus, found at the base of the horse’s jaw, is a delicate group of bones that anchors the tongue and plays a key role in the horse’s balance and movement. Strong muscles connect directly to the hyoid. When a bit pinches the tongue, it sets off a chain reaction along the whole underside of the horse.

1. The Omohyoid
The omohyoid muscle connects the hyoid bones to the inside of the shoulder blade. When the horse tenses its tongue due to bit pressure, the omohyoid tightens immediately. Since horses don’t have a collarbone, their front legs are held up only by muscles and fascia. If the omohyoid is tight, it locks the shoulder and shortens the front stride. 2. The Thoracic Sling
The chain continues past the shoulder. The pathway runs through the deep chest muscles and along the abdominal tunics, which act like slings to support the horse’s barrel. When the neck and shoulder are tense, the whole underside tightens, making it impossible for the horse to use its core and lift its back. (Elbrønd & Schultz, 2021, pp. 14-40)
3. The Pelvis & Hind Leg
Since this line connects directly to the pelvis and the fascia of the hind leg, tension travels all the way to the back. The pelvis can’t tilt, which limits the TFL at the front of the hip. (DVM, 2026)
To move the leg forward against all this tension, the semitendinosus at the back of the thigh has to work much harder. That’s why this horse had such a tight, overdeveloped muscle there—it was struggling against a tense jaw. (Egenvall et al., 2015)
Listen to the Horse
This session offered a beautiful reminder to listen to the horse. Whether you ride bitted or bitless, if the horse is pulling away from, backing off, or bracing against pressure, you will get a rigid, compromised result. True rein contact means the horse is actively seeking the connection because it feels safe, stable, and comfortable to do so (which should never be confused with leaning on the bit!). A frame can never force true collection. It starts with physical comfort, grows through trust in the contact, and shows up as gorgeous, unrestricted freedom in the body.
