Could Botox Be Affecting Cues From Human Facial Recognition?

This headline might sound like science-fiction, but is actually a potentially serious piece of the human-equine puzzle: Botox.

Before you ask, NO I’m not suggesting a forehead lift for your horse! I’m talking about the very real implications of a human caregiver having cosmetic injections and how that might be affecting the crystal-clear communication your horse relies on. I found myself having a facinating conversation with a Psychotherapist and between us we discussed a potential link between how horses and children interpret our expressions and the topic of Botox came up. So I did some research in to the “frozen face” phenomenon in children and applied research on equine facial recognition – I hope you’ll find this comparison interesting and useful.

The Case of the Missing Frown

The science behind this is rooted in something called the Facial Feedback Loop. It sounds complex, but it boils down to this: we feel an emotion, we make a face, and making that face also helps us understand the emotion.

When we see someone angry, we subconsciously mimic their frown—a tiny internal muscle movement that acts like an emotional antennae, helping us decode their mood.

When you use Botox (which paralyses those frown muscles, often between the eyebrows), you essentially switch off that antennae. Research on humans shows you’re not just looking calmer; you become less effective at reading other people’s negative emotions—especially anger. And, crucially, you’re not showing your own subtle negative cues.

Why should this matter to us? Because your horse is the ultimate, highly sensitive lie detector.

They don’t just ‘discriminate’ between a happy and angry face; they demonstrate a functional understanding of the emotional display.

Think about your horse seeing an angry face. What happens?

  1. Left-Gaze Bias: They reliably orient their heads to view the angry face with their left eye. This is a measurable, objective neuroscientific response, as the left eye feeds the right cerebral hemisphere, which is specialized for processing high-arousal and threatening stimuli. Your horse literally categorizes your angry face as a high-priority threat.
  2. Heart Rate Spike: Angry faces trigger a significantly quicker acceleration in their heart rate (HR). This is the classic “fight or flight” stress response, confirming they attribute meaning—potential negative reinforcement or physical threat—to the angry expression.

In short, your horse is a natural lie detector and a sophisticated emotional barometer. They are acutely sensitive to the very negative cues (anger, threat) that research suggests are the most affected by Botox injections in humans.

The ‘Poker Face’ Problem

Think about children: developmental studies show that if a parent gives a child a totally neutral, blank, unresponsive “poker face,” the child becomes significantly distressed. They rely on clear emotional signals for security.

While a bit of Botox isn’t a total blank slate (you can still smile!), it causes a qualitative distortion. Your horse is looking at a familiar, trusted caregiver, but the subtle, regulatory signals are gone or muted. The fleeting worried look when they’re about to trip, the small tension that warns them to slow down—they’re missing.

Your horse relies on your predictability. Conflicting or confusing signals from their favourite human forces them to work much harder to figure out if you’re happy or secretly annoyed. That unpredictability is a major source of anxiety for them.

What’s a Horse Owner to Do?

This isn’t about judging anyone! But it is about us taking responsibility for clear, consistent communication with our sensitive partners. If you’ve had—or are considering—injections, here are my three thoughts for being mindful of your communication with your horse:

  1. Compensate Loudly (Use Voice and Body) – Your face might be temporarily taking a break, so use your other tools! Intensify your vocal tone and body language. A clear, calm voice and open posture are crucial. Don’t rely on a muted frown to convey “careful.”
  2. Monitor Consciously – Since the science suggests your brain might be less attuned to subtle negative emotion, you must consciously monitor your horse’s entire body. Don’t rely solely on reading their facial cues; watch their ears, tail, overall posture, and tension lines around their eyes.
  3. Be Predictably Positive – Consistency is paramount. Your horse uses emotional memory to define future interactions. Prioritize clear, consistent, and positive emotional displays to reinforce their sense of safety and maintain trust.

Our horses are amazing emotional mirrors. Let’s make sure we’re giving them a signal that is clear, consistent, and easy to read—even if we’ve temporarily decided to skip a few wrinkles.
